Daily life of the First Year program

Each session our children greet their educators upon arrival and proceed to put their belongings away in their locker and join the group on the mat for our music session. Our morning music brings together musical theory, singing and dancing, as well as concepts from our Kinder program topics we are exploring each term. We also pay our respects to the Wathaurong People on whose land we learn and play.

Following our morning music the children commence free indoor and/or outdoor play.

The educators plan a wide range of stimulating and engaging learning activities for the children to explore at their own pace.

Our first-year kindergarten children engage in two mealtimes during their five-hour session: a morning tea and lunch. During our three-hour Wednesday session the children have just one mealtime. We eat our snacks at the tables in our undercover outdoor area, and this is a wonderful opportunity to build community and share conversations.

Educators support and encourage the first-year Kindergarten children as they settle in to their initial year of sessional Pre-School. Children’s social, emotional and physical development is nurtured by the educators through exploring:

  • Listening
  • Following simple instructions
  • Waiting for a turn
  • Sharing and caring for Kinder equipment
  • Participating in pack-up times
  • Engaging in group time activities and discussions
  • Communicating in social situations and beginning to understand conflict resolution
  • Playing alongside and with others
  • Exploring their own interests

Educators ensure there is time for individual play, shared play and group times. Stories, singing and dancing are all enjoyed together.

Educators continuously observe and note children’s development, engage with parents and carers to develop learning goals for the children, and track the children’s progress throughout the year.

Moriac Kinder welcomes you to visit any sessions to see the program in action and ask more questions.
